Hey there! 👋

A number of people over past few months have assumed I'm a bot or some kind of automated account.

I can assure you I am not, there is a human being behind this keyboard! I write and post everything manually, there's no scheduling or scripts or stuff like that.

If you have any questions about the Fediverse, or requests or suggestions or comments or feedback just @ or DM me, I will try to help if I can.

The aim of this account is to help and encourage people use the #Fediverse, even with the most basic things. There's no such thing as a stupid question! 👍

@FediTips He there! =) Thanks for encouraging people to ask questions!

Just yesterday I was wondering if I can follow peertube accounts from my mastodon or friendica account? And if I can even like videos on peertube from my mastodon or friendica account?
Als Antwort auf Torsten

Yes, you can do all those things :blobhappy: Easiest way to explain this is if you try it out.

For example try following @pianotv and interacting with the videos there from within Mastodon (and I think it works in Friendica too). If you want to see what the account looks like in PeerTube, click on the profile's avatar photo.

There are interesting PeerTube videos and accounts to follow at @FediVideos (which is currently focusing on Halloween, but normally posts general interest videos).

@FediTips @FediVideos 🎃 @pianoTV Thanks!

Yeah I tried it and following peertube channels from mastodon works great. Alas, I can't seem to like some videos. When I try to like one of @pianoTV videos I am asked again to login (with user name and password) to the Tilvids instance. Which I can not since I don't have an account there. Signing up on each accout to like videos seems counter-fedi-tuitive. Is this a bug?`

You don't need to be in PeerTube to like PeerTube videos.

Just go to the post you want to like within Mastodon, then click on the like button (the star) while still within Mastodon.

(I've attached a photo to illustrate)

You don't need to click on the link to view the video, just press play. Replies to the post are added to the video as comments, and likes on the post are added as likes.

It's all seamless!

Short answer is no, because PixelFed will be on another instance.

Each Fediverse account is on one instance at a time. You can move it from one instance to another, but you cannot use the same account on many instances simultaneously.

I don't know, but maybe someone could set up a cross-posting system though?

You can only see what your server has received, so unless someone else on your instance has already followed them only the most recent posts will usually arrive. You can force older ones to be fetched by copying the URL into the search bar.
Als Antwort auf Mark

Yup, Mark said it all!

The Fediverse works like this because updating all posts from all the millions of users everywhere would overwhelm small instances, so instead it only updates accounts that people on that instance follow.

@FediTips ohh that's an interesting topic that I was also thinking about today. I just created my own friendica instance and now I'm thinking about how it works with that federation. Is it, the more I follow people on other instances the more content from there I will get?
Would be interesting to understand this "federation" method better :)
Als Antwort auf Aaron

Yes, that's exactly it, the more accounts you follow, the more content will appear on your instance.

I wasn't sure if the account represented a person or a small group, but I did assume FediTips was a human curated set of interesting Fediverse users.

If you want very technical stuff there's the official Mastodon documentation:

There's also an interesting guide here:

Ha! Claiming you are not a bot is the tell-tale sign you *are* a bot!

Hi!! I’m VERY new to Mastodon:) Can I follow #Fediverse?
Learning how to use ethical software!🙏🏽
Als Antwort auf AmoraWolfe

You're on the Fediverse right now, Mastodon is part of it.

When you follow people on here, you are following people on the Fediverse 👍

I guess we need one of those machines...
