True! I've seen there's a couple of decentralized VPN projects, usually blockchain-based, that pretend to bring some more security to that space. Or should I use Tor?

IMO the best VPN is a self-hosted (collocation or vps) box that isn't in the 14 eyes (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five_Eyes) and running Wireguard. You could then use tor from that machine if needed. I wouldn't bother simply using a VPN service, even outside the 14 eyes... because, well, how do you know it's not a honeypot?

There's some very cheap and adequate overseas VPS hosts, but you would also want to be careful how you pay the remote machine. Probably using anonymized crypto.

the issue is with wireguard you must store keys in the VPS itself. So whoever can read your volume can read your keys.

@loweel Yes, it should be a basic option to be allowed paying any VPS-related service through privacy-focused crypto, but till now I haven't seen any even accepting Monero or Zcash. Could be a project worth launching 😃.
